Cube Quest

Cube Quest is a simple, fun game, where you are trying to knock your opponent’s king off the playing area before they do the same to you.

The playing area is made up of two mats placed adjacently, and each player sets up their army (made of plastic character cubes) as they want to before the game starts; both to protect their own king and attack the opposition’s. You can play the official rule of choosing 40 points worth of cubes (different characters have a different points value), or ignore it and just throw everything out.

On a turn you can flick a cube. The cubes have pictures on them of the character they represent, and some of the cubes’ sides have a shadow of the character instead. If, having been flicked onto the opponent’s playing mat (their territory) they land shadow-side up, they have been captured, and have to be rolled to determine whether they can escape back to their own territory – if they land shadow-side up again, they haven’t and they’re out of the game.

If they don’t land shadow-side up after being flicked, then they stay where they are and are closer to the opponent’s king. Cubes are removed from the game if they’re knocked completely off the board (by another opponent attacking, or their own misfortune) and the aim is to make your opponent’s king suffer this fate.

There are multiple different types of character in the armies, and some have a special ability – an extra flick, say, or the power to ‘hide’ in an opponent’s territory, but with very young players is best to keep things simple and use the three basic character types.

It does seem to appeal to boys in the main - perhaps the fantasy theme aligned to the overtly silly mechanics of flicking stuff. It's like bouncy-castle enthusiasts were asked to come up with an alternative to chess. But few games also lead to general hilarity in the way Cube Quest does - those cubes might be dressed up as warriors, but they behave like lemmings!

    Take That!

Cube Quest is all about Take That, as you're trying to destroy each other. However it's short and very silly, so doesn't feel spiteful.

It's not a taxing game on the mind. Quite the opposite, in fact.

    Again Again!

Cube Quest is fun and silly and does invite winner-stays-on competitions, or even leagues. Players can play head to head or as teams.
