Men at Work

Designed by: Rita Modl

The Men at Work here are undertaking a construction job – they (or you) flip over cards to decide what to build. You’ll always be adding a girder or a worker, and the cards will also supply some guidelines as to where they should be placed and what, if anything, they should be carrying. Workers often carry beams or bricks ( – sometimes both) and a strong worker will even take one end of a girder. Maybe even a new support will be added, bearing another girder itself.

What are you building? Who knows?! The important thing is not to kill anyone. Or – just as bad – drop a brick. Anytime you drop anything, you lose one of your precious safety certificates,  and end your turn. If you lose your last one, you’re out of a job – and out of the game. About a quarter-way through the deck of cards, the construction boss Rita turns up. From now on if you place the highest component on the construction sire, you’ll gain an employee of the month certificate! Gain a certain number to win instantly, or – more likely – play it as safe as possible to wait until the cards run out. At this point the player with the most certificates (both kinds) will win.

A fun and funny stacking game that almost any age can play... it's also rather hard! We play a house rule where if you drop something you've placed on your current turn you don't lose a safety certificate, but anything else knocked off would cause you to lose one. It can still be tricky, but makes the game last a bit longer and stops fat-fingered adults getting perturbed too quickly. I hate the bricks! The have to go on worker's shoulders and the slightest angle makes them slip off. But I like the game...

A cute stacking game, perhaps a bit more more restrictive and less inventive than Bausack or Junk Art, but certain to appeal to young players who want to feel they're working on something big.

The guru's verdict

  • Take That!

    Take That!

Not much; more the fickle hand of fate than anything.

  • Fidget Factor!

    Fidget Factor!

Low, as long as no-one is taking an age to make a decision. Often you're relieved to be spectating anyway!

  • Brain Burn!

    Brain Burn!

    Absent.

  • Again Again!

    Again Again!

The game itself follows a familiar path after you've played a couple of times, but there's a fair degree of variation in how the cards come out, and it's pretty fun no matter how many times you've played.
