Om Nom Nom

Om Nom Nom is a simple card game of predation: who is going to eat whom?

The boards are set up on the table showing three food chains: wolf/rabbit/carrot, cat/mouse/cheese and hedgehog/frog/fly. For each of the three rounds, a set of dice are rolled that match the six ‘prey’ (rabbits/cats/frogs/flies… and carrots and cheese) and these are placed at the appropriate place on the board.

Play is simple: everybody has a set of six cards that match the predators, and all players secretly choose which card to play. If you play a rabbit card, you’ll get to pick up some (if not all) of the carrots… unless of course, someone has played the wolf card, in which case they take your card for themselves: nabbing other people’s cards is worth one point, dice from the rabbit/mouse/frog areas are one point, but the precious carrot/cheese/fly dice are worth two points, so that’s what you’re really trying to get if you can.

After all six cards are played, scores are recorded and the next round begins – everyone gets their hand back and dice are rerolled. After three rounds, the game ends.

Sam says

It's a simple game where you're trying to guess what the other players will do. Fun, and easy to learn, but possibly not the game to stand up to repeated plays. There's room for a little strategy with 2 or 3, but beyond that it gets chaotic.

The guru's verdict

  • Take That!

    Take That!

    Heavy. You're eating each other!

  • Fidget Factor!

    Fidget Factor!

Almost none, as long as people choose their cards quickly.

  • Brain Burn!

    Brain Burn!

No maths or engine-building here, but some second-guessing and table-reading...

  • Again Again!

    Again Again!

It's not a game with a huge amount of variety, but it plays zippily enough
